Sven Lončarić received Diploma of Engineering and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) in 1985 and 1989, respectively. He received Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from University of Cincinnati, USA, in 1994. From 2001-2003, he was an assistant professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA. Since 2011, he has been a tenured full professor in electrical engineering and computer science at FER.

He was a project leader on a number of research projects in the area of image processing and computer vision. He founded the Image Processing Laboratory at FER and the Center for Computer Vision at University of Zagreb. Prof. Lončarić has been a co-director of the national Center of Research Excellence in Data Science and Cooperative Systems and the director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence at FER. With his students and collaborators, he published more than 290 scientific papers. Prof. Lončarić is a Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. According to recent Stanford University studies he was ranked in the top 2% of the most cited world scientists in the category artificial intelligence - image processing. For his scientific work he received several awards including the annual National Science Award.
