Venue

NSK, the National and University Library in Zagreb, is the largest Croatian library and operates both as the national library of Croatia and the central library of the University of Zagreb.

Venue

The National and University Library (NSK) in Zagreb, a temple of Croatian culture, is the central national library and information centre in the Republic of Croatia and the central library of the University of Zagreb. Its central location in Hrvatske Bratske Zajednice Street, close to one of the busiest intersections in Zagreb, means that the library can be easily reached from all major hotels in Zagreb. It is also within a short walking distance from important city attractions and the old part of Zagreb. The Glass Cube, as this great edifice is often referred to, is not only a beautifully designed, culturally significant venue with important meetings capacity and service, but also a wonderful stage to various cultural, scientific and business events.

The library building opened in 1995 on over 36,000 square metres, with almost 13,000 metres of shelving in open-access reading rooms and 110,000 metres of mobile shelving in closed stacks areas holding almost three million volumes. Fifty years had passed from the initial plans to the finished building, which took seven years to complete.

The beautiful edifice was designed by renowned Croatian architects Velimir Neidhardt, Davor Mance, Zvonimir Krznarić and Marijan Hržić, who designed its magnificent glass roofs and monumental verticals intertwining elements of stone, metal and glass in a style that embodies a library fit for the 21st century.
